Leave aside BCCI’s commentary panel for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020), even after he issued an apology, Sanjay Manjrekar has not even been picked by the official broadcaster Star Sports in their 90 member IPL commentary team.

Manjrekar who fell apart with BCCI’s top brass after his ‘bits and pieces’ comments during the 2019 world cup had issued an apology to the board via email but it hasn’t worked.

It is better I don’t comment on that” when asked by Moneycontrol on whether he will miss doing the IPL 2020 commentary this year.

“I will be working full-time with ESPN-Cricinfo for their pre-match and post-match shows. I am also in the final stages of discussions with a news channel and will be in-house expert for a fantasy league platform. I will also be writing columns plus doing updates for an FM radio station”, he told the platform.

BCCI earlier had picked Sunil Gavaskar, Matthew Hayden, Michael Slater, Simon Doull, Pommie Mbangwa, L Sivaramakrishnan, Murali Kartik, Deep Dasgupta, Rohan Gavaskar, Harsha Bhogle and Anjum Chopra to do commentary for the World Feed of IPL 2020. These commentators will work on the 3 designated locations (AbuDhabi, Dubai, Sharjah) of IPL 2020 in UAE.

As reported earlier, Manjrekar failed to get place in the BCCI panel. Not only this he has not even been picked by the official broadcaster Star Sports for their 90 member on-ground and in-studio commentary team.

According to Manjrekar, he has been ‘completely misunderstood’ on his on-air comments

“We, Indians, are very sensitive to criticism. The other problem is that English as a language is often misunderstood. For most people, it is not even the second language. A lot of the terms I tend to use are misunderstood. For example, when I had said that ‘Tendulkar-related’ issues are like the elephant in the room. So, that was a term that was misunderstood. People thought I was calling him a ‘white elephant’. In the case of ‘bits and pieces’, people thought it was the degradation of a player. So, if I would have said ‘non-specialist’, then I don’t think there would have had been a furore. Once Naseer Hussain had called some Indian players ‘donkeys on the field’, which is a normal English term for people who move slowly and there was a big controversy. So, that is one of the problems in making observations in English and assuming that everyone knows”, he told Moneycontrol.
