Say Buh-Bye to the Mini Bag and Hello to the New Go-To

If you were to read any of the text chains between me my friends, then it would be abundantly clear how often we discuss one of possibly the most impractical trends of the century: mini bags. While some handbags have been popular for a long time, it is only within the past few years that the mini-bag trend has risen in prominence. This is due in part to Instagram-favorite designers like Jacquemus, helping to usher the trend into viral territory. And while my mini-bag ramblings have yet to dissipate, I must admit that I’m relieved to see a new, more practical purse is on the horizon. This season, please welcome the clutch bag.

Clutch bags first emerged in the 1920s to address the needs of consumers who, in lieu of a more practical, traditional carryall, were craving small, stylish bags that would compliment specific looks. It’s true that like mini bags, clutches can be a fussier choice; since by definition, these bags require some sort of hand-holding. But that doesn’t mean they’re not practical—some of the best clutch bags actually can hold more than a Tic-Tac, cost less than a fortune, and dare I say, give pockets a run for their money. Don’t believe me? Ahead, I’ve rounded up the 35 best clutch bags in every shape, and at every price point.

Bottega Veneta ushered in the popular cloud-shaped clutch back in July of 2018; and two years later, it’s clear that this bag and its various iterations are here to stay.
Not able to yet invest in Bottega Veneta’s cloud clutch? This one should hold you over.
Redone leather details were all over F/W 20 runways, and what better way to clutch trend than with this faux-leather woven bag?
If you’re looking for a more affordable designer version of the iconic cloud shape clutch that won’t be the equivalent cost of New York City rent, Mansur Gavriel’s clutch bag is one of you’ve been dreaming of.
A crocodile cloud clutch? Sign us up.
This is the type of versatile clutch that everybody wants to get their hands on.
And finally, it’s not a tribute to the cloud bag without the brand that made the cloud clutch happen: Bottega Veneta. With new iterations of this clutch shape, including chunky chains and even fringe, Bottega keeps this It bag ever relevant.
The pouch dates back to medieval times, but it has evolved over the years from its original hand-held version to iterations that include zippers, and even handle straps. Whether you opt for a traditional square style or a pouch shape (which will be trending through the end of the year), you can’t go wrong with this clutch.
Isn’t this just the cutest? Pretty sure your go-to sanitizer fits perfectly, too.
Perfect for when you only need the essentials.
Pouch clutches don't have to come in the traditional square or coin purse-inspired shape—you can still pay homage to this classic bag, with a little more fun like opting for this Shrimps clutch.
If you want to channel the 1920s origins of pouch clutch, opt for a satin or beaded version, like this design from Ganni.
We live for a metallic moment, especially if it's in the form of a clutch.
Pouches are all about making a mini-statement, and what better way to do so than with this hand-made transparent bag filled with real pressed flowers and a kiss-lock?
One of the more iconic versions of the clutch bag, the envelope/folded clutch, is a staple piece in many stylish wardrobes.
Chain details will continue to be huge this fall.
If you’re looking to invest in an envelope clutch that won’t cost a fortune, this is the one.
This is a fantastic clutch bag. Plus, it’s a steal.
Found: The ultimate, and by far most coveted, envelope clutch.
Is it just me, or did the gold handle on this folded clutch bag make your heart skip a beat?
For when you're feeling fancy.
Another iconic iteration of the clutch bag is the box clutch. While typically this bag is made from acrylic, today, you can find it in a variety of materials, sizes, and styles, making it a fun piece to add to any ensemble.
What makes this box clutch perfect aside for the chain detail? Its surprisingly affordable price.
Brother Vellies’s clutch is a fresh take on the classic box clutch shape.
Who said box clutches had to be put in a box? This clutch from Zara redefines the staple bag.
You’ve probably spotted this bag before (as it has quite the fan base including Megahan Markle herself). Fans aside, it’s a must-have for any collector.
Cult Gaia does it again with this dreamy box clutch.
It doesn’t get dreamier than Olympia Le Tan’s box clutch’s in the shape of a book. BRB, pinning this to my shopping board.
Let’s be real here: Some of us love clutches but hate having to hold them. Enter the wristlet. While there’s also the bracelet bag (think of Chloé’s famous one), this style still qualifies as a clutch, but can easily slide onto your wrist so that you don’t have to worry about carrying something.
Who wouldn’t want to slip this cute ‘lil bag onto their wrist?
Wristlets don’t have to be fussy—look for a classic one like this that can be worn for seasons to come.
If you live for a "moment" (or just a dramatic bag), then this wristlet will do it for you.
This is the perfect everyday wristlet clutch. Plus, it features one of the summer's biggest bag trends: buckles.
We're placing huge bets on fringe making a major comeback this fall.
Another wristlet clutch to pin to the dream bag board.
