IOC Olympic Channel huge success, records 3.3 billion views since 2016

The International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Channel has recorded more than 3.3 billion video views across all platforms since its launch in 2016, the operation announced today.

Commemorating its fourth anniversary today, the digital media platform outlined its growth across multiple digital platforms since its inception after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The milestone was reached courtesy of more 25,000 pieces of video content, representing all Olympic sports disciplines and 206 countries, being produced since its launch four years ago at the end of Rio 2016.

Continuing its upward viewership trend, there was a 65 per cent increase over the previous 12 months in monthly returning users, they claimed.

On social media, the Olympic Channel community has grown to more than 10.4 million, with 74.9 per cent of those engaging with content on social media under the age of 35.

The IOC credited a fourth year of success to its coverage and promotion of the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympics, which led to the event being the most digitally consumed Winter Youth Games to date.

The channel, the brainchild of IOC president Thomas Bach, has produced more than 25,000 pieces of video content representing all Olympic sports disciplines in 206 countries since its launch and has shown 76 original series and films.

It has also formed partnerships with 95 sport federations and organisations, transmitting more than 5,400 live events.

The channel has entered in to distribution partnerships with IOC’s rights holding broadcasters in 175 territories, including recent launches on CBC GEM in Canada, Swisscom in Switzerland and 7plus in Australia.

Other partners include: NBC in USA; the Japan Consortium, the group of Japanese broadcasters that holds rights to broadcast the Olympic Games until 2024; Globo in Brazil; and BeIN Media Group, the pay-TV broadcaster in the Middle East and North Africa.

The channel has also launched on Amazon Fire TV and Roku.
