Pro Volleyball to return early with more teams, longer season

The Pro Volleyball league for the second season is all set to return earlier and last longer – close to five weeks. The league, that is playing a catalyst for the growth of volleyball in India, will also have two more teams and at least one more venue than the inaugural season, which was played across two cities.

Tuhin Mishra, MD and Co-Founder of Baseline Ventures, the promoters of the league, has confirmed to InsideSport.co that the league in the second season will have eight teams. “A team each from the North and East region will join the existing six for the second edition. We are engaged in talks with various prospective team buyers. Announcements will be made in due course,” he said.

“We are also looking at increasing the number of days. The league in the second season will be extended up to five weeks and at least one more venue will be added to the two locations we have had in the inaugural season.

The sport has also received a shot in the arm from the recent performance of Chennai Spartans, who have created a sort of record for Indian volleyball. The Pro Volleyball Season 1 champions have become the first ever club from India to reach the semi-finals stage at the Asian Club Volleyball championship. “Volleyball as a sport is growing in the country. The Pro Volleyball Champion club Chennai Spartans have made it to the just-concluded Asian Club Championships. This is the best performance ever by an Indian club,” said Mishra.

The PVL was watched live in over 45 countries worldwide and garnered a total reach of 161,157 in Season 1. The inaugural edition had attracted some of the biggest names from the volleyball world including David Lee and Paul Lotman.

According to the post-event report by Nielsen Sports & Entertainment, TV viewership for PVL in season 1 was considerably higher than the badminton and table tennis leagues, which have already completed four and two seasons, respectively.
