How to Wash Cashmere Yourself (and Avoid that Dry Cleaning Bill)

As the weather starts to warm up, it’s time to start thinking about storing away your sweaters for the season in anticipation of upcoming good weather — but we all know how expensive dry-cleaning can get.

In the interest of saving some coin, we popped by Black Goat Cashmere in Toronto for a few pro tips on how to clean cozy cashmere sweaters. As it turns out, they recommend against dry cleaning which damages the delicate fibres faster. Here are their 4 foolproof steps to washing your own sweaters and and keeping them looking their best:

  1. Add a capful of Eucalan or mild baby shampoo to a basin of cold-tepid water.
  2. Soak for 20 minutes occasionally massaging the sweater with your hands.
  3. Gently squeeze out the excess water. Roll in a towel and lay flat to dry (do NOT put it in the dryer).
  4. Iron inside out.

That’s it! The more often you wash your sweaters, the fluffier and softer they’ll get.
