ICC World Cup organisers to take action for ticket resale at ₹ 11 lakh: Report

The International Cricket Council World Cup organisers will take legal action against ticket resale sites as the tickets for some of the games are being sold for as high as £12,000 (₹ 11 lakh) or more.

The highest “premium” for the most expensive tickets on online ticket resale platform Viagogo is reported to be 104 times higher than the face value.

According to a report in the BBC, the tickets for the World Cup match between England versus Australia game at the Lord’s have been sold on Viagogo for ₹ 11 lakh and more.

The BCCI all set to initiate legal proceedings against ticket reselling digital platforms. “We are working closely with lawyers to identify secondary ticket sites which infringe our terms and conditions,” BCC has quoted an ICC World Cup spokesperson as saying. “We are taking appropriate enforcement action against them as required.”

The law in the UK allows resale of tickets for the international cricket matches. However, the World Cup organisers have sold the tickets on “no resale” terms. The ICC World Cup’s ticketing website states that no ticket should be offered for public sale.

This declaration on the website technically becomes an accepted pre-conditions for all the buyers who have bought their tickets from the website.

Meanwhile, Viagogo has clarified that it has no role in escalating the ticket prices. “Viagogo does not set ticket prices, sellers set their own prices, which may be above or below the original face value. Where demand is high and tickets are limited, prices increase,” stated a Viagogo statement.

Viagogo is an online ticket marketplace for ticket resale. The company, which was founded in London in 2006, has a network of more than 60 global websites with customers in 160 countries.

The World Cup will take place in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July this year.
