Maradona’s unique Red, No. 9 shirt goes for ₹9.75 lakh in charity auction

Diego Maradona as an iconic footballer will commonly be identified as No. 10 and Argentina’s blue and white striped jersey. While playing for clubs as professional the hero of Argentina’s 1986 World Cup triumph would retain the No. 10.

When Maradona played for Serie A club Turin in Italy, it was yet again ‘blue’ and No. 10, but for one exception. He did wear a Red shirt with No. 9 in one of the Napoli games. Little did Maradona know that the shirt he has embraced for giving his No. 10 to team-mate Gianfranco Zola as a token of respect would become a prized possession worth lakhs of rupees.

The shirt that for its red colour and No. 9 became a unique collection in Maradona’s football memorabilia has earned €12,000 ($13,600 / ₹9,76,000) at an auction in Turin.

Maradona had played in that top during an Italian Serie A fixture at Pisa during the 1990-1991 season. He had given his usual number ten to teammate Gianfranco Zola.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Zinedine Zidane jerseys were among the 222 other sporting memorabilia that were bought at the charity auction in the northern Italy. Other prominent membrobilia inclused an Eddy Merckx cycling vest and a Richie McCaw All Blacks rugby shirt.

The former Argentina captain is also known for supporting various charities, including the UNICEF.
